Family Taekwondo in Damascus, MD

A young Taekwondo student in sparring gear throwing a kick

Family Taekwondo is our Taekwondo program for ages 8 and up, and parents are welcome to train right alongside their kids. No experience needed. Everyone starts at the beginning.

What you and your child will learn

  • Four elements. Forms, kicking, footwork and sparring. Each class focuses on one of them.
  • Distance and kicking. Most fights start with punching or grabbing, which happens up close. Taekwondo trains your legs so you can keep someone at a distance.
  • Focus and discipline. Students master each technique before moving on, so they learn patience and persistence.
  • Character. Our student code asks every student to be devoted to the greater community, be respectful of parents, siblings and teachers, use good judgment before harming any living thing, cultivate an indomitable spirit, and be dedicated to the dojang and always finish what they start.

What a class looks like

Our Taekwondo program follows a structured, Kukkiwon approved skill-based curriculum. Each student moves forward at their own pace and masters techniques before advancing. A typical class includes a warm-up and stretching, practice on the basics, kicking drills and work on forms.

On your first visit, you line up with the class for the opening salute, and the class welcomes you. Then an instructor works with you one-on-one while the class warms up. You'll learn a proper front kick on a kicking shield, and the instructor explains how the program works and answers your questions. Then you join the class with an assistant or experienced student beside you.

Students earn colored stripes for each element: red for forms, green for kicking, blue for footwork and yellow for sparring, plus a white stripe for encouraging and helping other students. Once you have all five, you can test for your next rank. New students start in our beginner class, and as skills grow, they move up to higher-level classes, then black belt. Understanding the basics takes just a few months.

We post the topic for every class, and every lesson is pre-recorded, so members can watch it in our app or member site before class for a preview or when reviewing for a test. Class days are on our class schedule.

Is it right for us?

Family Taekwondo is a good fit if:

  • Your child is 8 or older and wants to be active, learn something real and build confidence.
  • You'd like to train together. The Taekwondo adage often holds true: the family that kicks together, sticks together!
  • You're looking for something that builds discipline and respect, not just exercise.

If your child is under 8, take a look at Little Dragons (7 and under) or come by for an assessment to see if your little one can keep up with the forms element of classes.
